AI vendor conversations are moving quickly, but credit unions still need a disciplined way to separate useful capability from unmanaged risk. The best starting point is not a long theoretical framework. It is a practical due diligence checklist that product, risk, compliance, IT, and business owners can use together.
That checklist should help leaders understand what the tool does, what data it uses, how decisions are reviewed, and whether the vendor can support the level of accountability a regulated financial institution needs.
Start with the use case
Before reviewing model claims or product demos, credit unions should define the business problem. Is the vendor supporting fraud detection, member messaging, lending operations, document automation, marketing, employee productivity, or analytics?
A clearly defined use case makes the risk review more concrete. The same AI capability may be low risk in an internal drafting workflow and much higher risk in a member-facing or credit-impacting process.
Ask what data the system touches

Useful questions include: how are false positives measured, how are complaints tracked, how are errors corrected, and how often are models or rules updated?
Confirm audit and reporting support
Credit unions should know what evidence the vendor can provide for internal reviews, board updates, examiner questions, and incident investigations. This may include logs, decision records, access history, change management notes, performance reports, and issue remediation records.
Do not skip exit planning
AI-enabled workflows can become deeply embedded. Before implementation, credit unions should understand how they would transition away from a vendor, export data, preserve records, and maintain member service continuity.
