Credit union boards do not need to become technical experts in artificial intelligence. They do need enough visibility to ask the right questions and confirm management is adopting AI with appropriate controls.

As AI becomes embedded in fraud tools, lending workflows, marketing systems, member service platforms, analytics, and employee productivity tools, board oversight should shift from curiosity to structured governance.

Start with where AI is already in use

The first board-level question should be simple: where is AI already operating inside the credit union or its vendor ecosystem?

Many institutions are using AI-enabled systems without labeling them as AI initiatives. Fraud scoring, chatbot workflows, document automation, marketing personalization, and analytics tools may all include machine learning or generative AI capabilities.

Ask for a simple inventory

Management should be able to provide a practical inventory of AI-enabled tools and use cases. It does not need to be complex at first. A useful inventory includes the tool, vendor, business owner, data involved, member impact, risk level, and review cadence.

The inventory gives boards a baseline for oversight and helps management avoid fragmented, undocumented adoption.

Separate internal productivity from member-impacting use

Boards should distinguish between low-risk internal uses and higher-risk workflows that affect members. Drafting internal training materials is different from influencing a lending decision, fraud hold, complaint response, or account access workflow.

This distinction helps the board focus attention where risk and accountability are highest.

Confirm data protection rules

Boards should ask how management prevents sensitive member or institutional data from being entered into unapproved AI tools. The answer should connect to existing privacy, cybersecurity, vendor management, and employee acceptable-use policies.

Understand vendor accountability

Most credit unions will adopt AI through vendors rather than building models internally. That means third-party risk management becomes central to AI governance.

Boards should ask whether contracts address data use, model changes, audit rights, monitoring, incident notification, subcontractors, and exit rights.

Look for human review points

AI can support decisions, but accountable people should remain in control of sensitive outcomes. Boards should ask where human review is required, who owns overrides, and how errors or complaints are escalated.

Ask how success and risk are measured

AI oversight should include both value and risk metrics. Management should be able to explain whether a tool is improving speed, accuracy, fraud detection, staff capacity, member experience, or cost — and whether it introduces complaints, false positives, bias concerns, or operational dependency.

The bottom line

Board oversight of AI should be practical and repeatable. The goal is not to slow responsible adoption. The goal is to make sure AI use is visible, governed, monitored, and aligned with member trust.

The best board conversations will focus on inventory, data, vendors, human review, risk metrics, and clear accountability.
